Mac IIci, IIvi, IIvx, IIsi, Performa 600, LCII, Color Classic, Performa 400-430 Only
Presto 8 Enabler Clean Install instructions
If you choose to do the Clean Install option, you will need to perform some additional steps to ensure that your computer will work after restart.
1. In the “clean,” New System folder you will need to install the Presto 8 Enabler, Virtual Enabler, & the extension Presto.
2. This can be done by just going to the Old System folder and dragging the Presto 8 Enabler, Virtual Enabler, & the extension Presto into the appropriate spots. If you cannot find these in the old system folder, the Presto 8 Enabler is provided on the OS 8 Installation Boot Disk, which can be put into the New System folder and will allow you to boot the computer.
3. Once this is done you should restart the computer and make sure everything is functioning normally with Mac OS 8™ as the new operating system.
3rd Party CD-ROM drives
If your CD-ROM drive will not mount when using our OS 8 Installation Boot Disk, then you will need to put your own CD-ROM driver software onto the diskette and delete the Apple CD-ROM driver. You will need to:
1. Unlock the OS 8 Installation Boot Disk and delete the Apple CD-ROM driver which is located in the extensions folder.
2. Drag and Drop your 3rd party driver on the closed system folder on the OS 8 Installation Boot Disk.(The driver should be only one piece of software.)
3.Eject the diskette. Lock it, and boot off the OS 8 Installation Boot Disk. This should allow the CD-ROM drive to mount normally.
Trouble Shooting
If the computer will not boot after performing the OS 8 upgrade, you can use the OS 8 Installation Boot Disk to restart the computer and check to see if the software components (Presto 8 Enabler, Virtual Enabler, & the extension Presto) are in the correct places. Then do a reboot.
If you are operating your Macintosh in 24-bit addressing mode and have either the extension A/ROSE or the control panel Closeview, your system will not boot. Restart with extensions off (hold down the shift key), turn on 32-bit addressing in the Memory control panel, or remove A/ROSE and Closeview, and restart.
Apple’s RAM Disk not compatible
The RAM Disk option in the Memory control panel is not compatible with the Presto accelerator. Turn off the RAM Disk when using the Presto accelerator. This does not apply to third-party RAM disk software.
Older Software not compatible
Some obsolete versions of applications software will not with the Presto accelerator installed. The following is a partial list of some common software (and the version) which is not compatible. Versions newer than the listed version are compatible: After Dark v2.5, Aldus Pagemaker v4.x, At Ease v1.x, Microsoft Excel v3.x, Microsoft Word v4, & Symatec Anti-Virus v3.5 The list is not exhaustive. If you have any of the programs listed, or another program which predates 68040 CPUs then you must upgrade to a version that is fully compatible with the 68040 CPU.
Also, older driver software for printers and scanners may need to be updated. Most of these updates are freely available from the manufacturers web site. (Example: Hewlett Packard DeskWriter series should be updated to version 6.0.3 available at www.hp.com.)
LocalTalk Networking or Printing requires System 7.1 or Network Software 1.5.1
If you are experiencing problems using a LocalTalk printer or using a LocalTalk network make sure you are using a recent version of the Apple LocalTalk software (LocalTalk version 57.0.4–which ships with System 7.1–or greater is required). Older versions of the networking software (using LocalTalk) may cause some items not to show up in the Chooser when the Presto LC accelerator is running. If you need to update the LocalTalk software, but do not wish to change System software version, install Apple’s Network Software Installer 1.5.1.
Apple LaserWriter 300 needs update
If you are using the Apple LaserWriter 300 you need to patch the LaserWriter 300 1.2 chooser extension (if you do not have version 1.2 of the chooser extension it is available from Apple). (The patcher is included on the diskette.) The Apple LaserWriter 300 Chooser extension has a bug in it which will lock up your Mac after printing to the LaserWriter 300. This bug is only present in the LaserWriter 300/ and does not affect any other LaserWriter or PostScript printer.
Norton Utilities Benchmarks
It is a known problem that Norton Utilities may sometimes incorrectly report that the accelerator is not running at full speed. This does not indicate a malfunction or misrepresentation of the Sonnet product, the Sonnet accelerator must run at full speed at all times. The speed of the accelerator board is set in hardware and cannot spontaneously change.
Installing New Software
When installing new software, if the installer indicates that it requires a 68040 processor or better to install, you may can try several things to get the software to install.
• First, make sure that the Presto extension is installed and loaded. If the installation instructions (for your new software) direct you to start with the Shift key down to disable extensions, you should manually disable all other extension and control panels, (System 7.5 or better= use Extensions Manager; Earlier Systems= drag the files out of the Extensions and Control Panels folders) except the Presto extension.
• Second, if possible, try using the Custom install. Sometimes a Custom install will allow you to install on a machine when an Easy install will not.
• Third, if the installer will not allow you to install on the accelerated Mac, install the software on a Mac that does meet the installers requirements and move the installed files to the accelerated Mac.
• Finally, some software which specifies that it requires a 68040 processor or better will still not run even with a Presto accelerator installed. This usually indicates that the software manufacturer actually requires other features that are standard in newer Macs than are absent in your accelerated Mac. Contact the software manufacturer or Sonnet Technical Support to see if this is the case with your new software.
Apple's Cache Switch Control Panel
If you are using System 7.1 or better your Control Panels folder may contain a control panel called Cache Switch. This control panel has an icon similar to the Presto extension's icon. Do not use this control panel. This control panel is used to disable the caches on the 68040 processor. Doing so on the Presto can cause either a decrease in performance of the Presto accelerator or, worse, may result in an inability to start your Mac.
If you do Disable the caches using the Cache Switch control panel, and you cannot get you Mac to start up correctly. You need to zap your parameter RAM (PRAM). To zap the PRAM hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys during startup until you hear a second startup chime. This resets the Mac to the factory defaults. You will then need to reset all the Apple control panels to your preferred settings (ex. Memory, Mouse, Monitors, etc).
Mac LC, LC II, Performa 400-430, Color Classic Only
2MB SIMMs may cause system freeze
If you are experiencing a system freeze while starting up with the Presto LC installed, and you have 2MB SIMMs installed in your RAM slots you may have defective SIMMs. You have 2MB SIMMs if you have 6MB of RAM in an LC or 8MB in a LC II or Performa. Some 2MB SIMM designs have been manufactured with a defect. These defective 2MB SIMMs do not generate one control signal per Apple specifications. A regular LC, LC II or Performa does not need these signals so the defect is undetectable until you install an accelerator. To see if this problem seems to apply to you remove the 2MB SIMMs and see if the problem disappears (if you have an original LC you will need to substitute some other memory in the RAM slots, the 2MB on the logic board may not be enough to boot your System software.) If your System boots OK with the RAM removed then you need to replace the 2MB SIMMs. We have not seen this defect with 1MB or 4MB SIMMs.
System 6.0.8 and Easy Access
The Presto accelerator is not compatible with the Easy Access extension in System 6.0.8. You should remove the Easy Access extension if you have it installed with System 6.0.8. This incompatibility does not affect the Easy Access control panel in System 7.0 and greater.
Color Classic Only
VRAM Expansion not supported
The Presto accelerator for the Color Classic does not support the Color Classic VRAM expansion slot. If you have installed additional VRAM (for thousands of colors) you must remove the VRAM SIMM during installation of the Presto accelerator. Failure to remove additional VRAM will result in a scrambled video display.
Mac IIci, IIvx, IIsi, Performa 600 Only
Radius Pivot Monitor compatibility procedure
Always boot your Mac with the monitor in Portrait (tall screen) position and wait until all the extensions and control panels load before switching to Landscape (wide screen) position. Failure to boot with the monitor in Portrait position will result in an inability to start your Mac.
